Project Description

Education Equity

What is Educational Equity?

In the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case, the U.S. Supreme Court declared education “a right which must be made available to all on equal terms.”  The court found that “separate” was in fact not “equal” and required state and local governments to open public schools to all children in the community.  This decision marked a huge a victory for equality.

Despite this landmark ruling, structural and social barriers to making a world-class public education “available to all on equal terms” still remain.  To achieve educational success for all, we must examine the allocation of resources and opportunities designed to equip all students for success.  We must recognize in this examination that some students require more support than others to get there.

Equality in education is achieved when students are all treated the same and have access to similar resources.  Educational Equity is achieved when all students receive the resources they need so they graduate prepared for success.
